The Waalbiirniny (Healing) Garden at St John of God Hospital Subiaco was envisioned and delivered with TDL’s involvement, creating a sanctuary that honours connection, culture, and care. Hospital gardens play a proven role in recovery, offering emotional, mental, and physical benefits through access to nature. This project builds on that evidence, establishing a restorative space where people can gather, reflect, and find respite within the hospital environment.
Developed in close collaboration with local Elders, cultural advisor Robyn Collard, and the Sisters of St John of God, the design celebrates shared histories and healing traditions. A curated palette of Indigenous medicinal species sits alongside plants significant to the Sisters’ story, with educational plaques and integrated public art—including a symbolic yarning circle—to promote storytelling, cultural connection, and quiet contemplation.
The garden serves as a living community space within the hospital, supporting wellness programs, small staff events, and intimate family visits. Flexible seating nodes, shaded paths, and improved accessibility ensure the landscape can be activated throughout the day while still offering quiet areas for privacy and recovery.
Landscape works included garden bed remediation, selective plant and tree removal to open the canopy, installation of a new dripline irrigation system, refreshed paving, mulching, and new seating integrated with existing structures. Together, these elements have transformed the courtyard into a welcoming, enduring, and culturally meaningful healing environment—one that extends the hospital’s mission of care beyond its walls.
